Spinal Research West Midlands Branch was set up in November 2006 by Colin on his return from Africa. The aim is to raise funds for International Spinal Research Trust (UK registered Charity Number: 281325). The funds will go towards the research function, projects chosen for their research value by Spinal Research's Scientific Committee.
The expedition highlighted the fact that spinal injury is a 'Global Problem'. A spinal cord injury devastates individuals and their family's lives all over the world - this problem is exacerbated in developing countries by poor infrastructure, negligible healthcare and poor education. Life expectancy of someone with a SCI in Africa is ONLY two years after the injury!
In the UK alone there are 40,000 spinally injured. Staggeringly, this figure increases by 3 every day. Fundamentally, therefore, research into spinal cord repair adds up to just one word - "Hope".
As spinal research receives very little public funding Colin wants to contribute towards this cause by continuing to raise funds through public speaking and event fundraising. As well as this he hopes to drive home the message that there is life after a spinal injury. For more information>(Link to Event program)
